Step by step through formulas, methods and models

"Mathematics fascinates with its clarity and structure - together we work our way through formulas, methods and models step by step." With this motto, Dr. Friederike Paetz, newly appointed Professor of Mathematics, Statistics and Special Computer Science at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences, wants to break down people's fears of numbers. In this interview, she talks about her first impressions of the campus, what is special about mathematical research and what advice she would give her younger self today.

Professor Paetz, you were appointed Professor of Mathematics, Statistics and Special Computer Science at the Department of Agriculture, Ecotrophology and Landscape Development at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences in May 2024. How were your first few months in Campus Bernburg and what were your impressions of the campus and the students?
I was impressed by the beautiful campus as soon as I arrived. In spring, everything was in full bloom, and even now the green surroundings invite you to linger and marvel. It is an environment that inspires learning and research. I was particularly pleased with the warm welcome I received from my new colleagues. There is a great atmosphere at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences, which made it really easy for me to get started. I will start teaching at the end of September with an online pre-course in mathematics and am looking forward to an exciting first winter semester with my students.

You studied mathematics with a minor in business administration at Paderborn University and completed your doctorate at Clausthal University of Technology in 2013. What originally drew you to mathematics and statistics?
I have always been fascinated by the clarity and structure of mathematics. The ability to present complex relationships in a simple and elegant way inspired me from the very beginning. At school, I was lucky enough to be supported by teaching staff who shared this enthusiasm. It was therefore a natural decision for me to study mathematics and then go on to do a doctorate and habilitation in a mathematical application area.

What are you currently working on at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences? What research projects are you focusing on?
Mathematics is a field that offers constant intellectual challenges and at the same time has enormous potential for improvement and innovation in many areas of society. The practical applications are incredibly diverse and that is what makes this field of research so appealing. I am involved in various research projects at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences, many of them in collaboration with other departments. Networking and working together with other researchers, especially from very different departments, is an essential building block for outstanding research.

In your opinion, what are the biggest challenges for students in the fields of mathematics, statistics and computer science, and how do you support them?
One of the biggest challenges is breaking down fears about mathematics and statistics. Many people have the idea that these subjects are difficult and abstract. I try to break down fears and pick up my students right there: Through lots of examples and applications, we work our way through formulas, methods and models together, step by step.

How do you see the future of mathematics and statistics education in the next ten years? Which technologies could play a decisive role in this?
In the future, education will be even more technology-driven, interactive and personalized. We are currently experiencing a real boom in digital learning opportunities. Technologies such as artificial intelligence could make it possible to use adaptive learning platforms to specifically address gaps in knowledge and offer individualized learning paths. Intelligent feedback systems could also provide immediate and detailed feedback, making learning much more efficient. We are already using these developments at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences, for example through our Moodle learning platform.

What advice would you give to your younger self who is just entering the world of science?
That's a very interesting question, which I would like to answer more broadly rather than just to myself: "Never be discouraged, always stay curious and question constantly!" Mistakes and setbacks sometimes offer options for much more fantastic perspectives and results than initially aimed for. I would also advise you not to underestimate the exchange with others. Especially at the beginning of an academic career, it is easy to forget how important networks are. A good network can open doors and facilitate valuable collaborations.
