On 22 April 2025, around 50 students from the Surveying and Geoinformatics degree programs (Bachelor's and Master's) at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences went to Hohenwarthe - their destination: the waterway intersection and, in particular, the opportunity to visit the large trough bridge in its drained state.
The trough bridge over the Elbe, which is currently dry due to maintenance and renovation work, is the longest canal bridge in Europe at 918 meters. This was a unique opportunity to explore not only the exterior but also the otherwise inaccessible interior of this important structure with a professional guided tour by the Elbe Waterways and Shipping Authority (WSA). The focus was on the planned renovation measures and the engineering geodetic work on the structure.
The many impressions and the joint exchange provided a unique practical reference for the course and the understanding of the specialist subject areas. The students were offered exciting insights into an extraordinary engineering structure as well as a direct link to professional practice in engineering surveying.
All in all, an instructive day full of technology, team spirit and the art of engineering - we would like to thank everyone involved! In particular, we would like to thank Mr. Marcel Bremer (WSA Elbe) and Mr. Andreas Petter from the Magdeburg Waterways Engineering Office, who guided the group through the site with great expertise and provided explanations.
