What’s actually left over when carrots are turned into juice—and what else can be made from them? On October 3, 2026, Anhalt University of Applied Sciences will open its doors to young explorers at its Campus Bernburg. As part of the nationwide “Türen auf mit der Maus” event, children and teens ages 10 to 16 are invited to experiment, taste, and discover how something new can be created from what might seem like food scraps.
From 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the Department of Agriculture, Ecotrophology and Landscape Development will be all about carrots. Participants will first press their own carrot juice and then take a closer look at the resulting carrot pulp. That’s because the pulp is still full of valuable nutrients and is far too good to throw away. The children and teens will immediately try their hand at making something out of it: Together, they’ll prepare crunchy Rice Krispie treats.
“We want to show the children that there’s often much more to food than meets the eye. When you try things out for yourself, process the ingredients, and, of course, taste them, you gain a whole new perspective on topics like food appreciation and sustainability,” says Professor Monika Brückner-Gühmann, who leads the hands-on activity together with Professor Friederike Paetz and Professor Christoph Wiedmer. In a playful way, they provide insights into questions that are also the focus of research and teaching at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences: How can food be used as completely as possible? How can byproducts be further processed? And how can new foods be created from them?
The “Türen auf mit der Maus” open house event is organized annually by Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR) around October 3. Companies, research institutions, universities, workshops, and many other organizations throughout Germany open their doors to children—doors that would otherwise remain closed to them. This year, Anhalt University of Applied Sciences is participating in the event with activities at its Campus Bernburg. And with a little luck, maybe even “Die Maus” will stop by.
There are 12 spots available for this hands-on activity. It is aimed at children and teens between the ages of 10 and 16. Participation is free of charge. Registration is required.
