Thomas Gehrke is studying Real Estate and Construction Management in Dessau. In this interview, Thomas explains how Architecture and Real Estate Management are combined in his studies and what he likes so much about Dessau as a place to study.


How did you find the niche of Real Estate and Construction Management and why did you choose this degree program?
After graduating from a university of applied sciences, I was looking for a degree program that suited me and my interests. The mix of Architecture and Management sounded really interesting and as I had already completed vocational training in the construction industry, this also seemed quite practical to me. So I contacted the Degree Program Advisor and asked him about the course and the content. His answer really convinced me and so I took the plunge. I have absolutely no regrets about choosing this degree program.


What should you bring with you for this course?
Definitely an interest in technical processes, but also in business management aspects. At the start of the course, the main focus is on the technical aspects of a building, such as all types of technical equipment, construction drawings, working with CAD programs, etc. Later on, it's all about financial management. Later on, the focus is on financial management, investment plans, management processes,
project development/management, etc. But there is no need to be afraid if you are not a scientific genius. It's all doable if you put in a bit of effort and have enough self-discipline and willingness to learn.


In addition to the content you mentioned, Anhalt University of Applied Sciences is also very practical. Did you have a favorite project?
It was/is definitely interesting that everything builds on each other. For example, I had to design my own building according to the rules of building construction, then draw it on paper true to scale and have now planned my building three-dimensionally down to the last detail. What I find fascinating is that not only can the construction costs be calculated in advance, but the management costs during the life cycle of the building can also be influenced and optimized in advance. That's what this degree program is all about - and that's what you should ideally focus on as a future real estate and construction manager!


Do you already have a plan for what might come after your Bachelor's degree?
Not exactly yet. Hopefully that will crystallize after completing the two internships that are still to come during my studies. At the moment, I'm leaning towards real estate management and project development in the portfolio. In other words, the classic field served by municipal/city housing companies, for example.


What does Dessau have to offer?
Although Dessau is of course not a party stronghold like much larger university cities, there is actually nothing lacking outside of the current coronavirus situation. In principle, there is everything a student's heart desires. Bars, clubs, cinemas, bowling centers, shopping centers, parks, streetcars and fast food on every corner.


And a small university location does have its advantages, doesn't it?
Yes, the nice thing about a small university location is that you make friends really quickly. We had a good chat on the introductory day and went out for a meal and a drink a few days later. You just can't be a loner, then it all works itself out. The "KIEZ Café", which is not far from the campus, is an excellent place for student get-togethers. The café on campus also organizes events and parties almost every week (outside of Corona). You can quickly get to know other students there if you want to.
