Anne Wechselberger is in her fifth semester of a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences. In this interview, she explains how she decided to study in Bernburg and what she would advise school leavers to do.


Why did you decide to study Business Studies in Bernburg?
I decided to study Economics when I was still at secondary school. My interest in this field increased during the time leading up to my Abitur, so it was a natural choice for me to study Business Studies. Another important criterion was the practical relevance of the course. I therefore wanted to study at a college rather than a university. Another important criterion for me when looking for a place to study was that I come from the local area and still see my future in the region.


How did you get to know Anhalt University of Applied Sciences?
My first contact with the university was at a regional study and career orientation day. I found out about the Business Studies degree program there. After that, I attended the university information day in Strenzfeld twice. I attended various lectures and visited the Business Administration information stand to find out more about the study options at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences. I was also able to get to know the campus and university life.


What has impressed you about the degree program so far?
I've been particularly impressed by the practical relevance of the courses so far, as the instructors have practical experience in Economics and the questions/examples are therefore also practice-oriented. Our lecturers also invite speakers to talk about the respective course content or report on their day-to-day work, so you get to know different perspectives and it brings variety to the lectures.


Do you also see advantages in a small study location like Bernburg?
Yes, because the courses, especially in the specialization phase, usually take place in manageable groups. This means there is more interaction and you are not a number. We also get the opportunity to gain initial experience with well-known software products during our studies, which is useful for labs and starting a career.


Did you have any worries that turned out to be unfounded in hindsight?
No, I didn't have any worries. Of course I had respect for the new things, but I think that's relatively normal.


What advice would you give to students who are still looking for a suitable degree program?
The choice of course should primarily be based on the area you want to work in later and what you enjoy or where your interests lie. Labs are a good way to find out. I would also take advantage of the information offered by the universities, e.g. the university information days, to find out more. You can get in touch with professors, students and graduates there and talk about their experiences or take a look at the university's facilities.
