Step by step, things are progressing at the pace of the students and members. Thousands of hours per week per semester are already behind them - the "VorOrt Haus" in Wolfgangsstraße is a mammoth project. But although the renovation and restoration of the brick building, which was last used as a school, is not yet complete, it is full of life and is already an established place of creativity and creative energy in Dessau.
Brigitte Hartwig, professor of communication design at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences and chairwoman of the VorOrt association, has made this house her mission together with students and Dessau residents: together they work and create, organize readings, concerts and get-togethers. With the VorOrt Haus, they provide a reason for students and Dessau residents to stay "on site". Their vision: to promote cultural and creative exchange between newcomers, Dessau residents and tourists. They also provide workspaces for students, offices for start-ups and studios for artists, giving everyone the freedom to develop their own visions.
The university's students are an integral part of the association. The Dessau location offers around 1,200 students on 10 degree programs a family atmosphere and close interaction with professors. In addition to an optimal education, there is a lot of potential for development and the opportunity to get actively involved in the student city and make a difference. There are many opportunities to get involved. One of these is the "schaubau summer school", which took place for the first time in 2018. The question "What can we do to show how attractive working and living in a medium-sized city like Dessau can be?" attracted design students from all over Europe. There will be a sequel this year.
