Vanessa Voigt is studying "Intermedia Design" at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences. In this interview, she talks about the opportunities to try out a wide-ranging degree program, arriving in Dessau and why she will be extending her Master's degree.
Vanessa, your master's degree program is very research-oriented. For which Bachelor's graduates would you recommend this degree program?
Vanessa Voigt: The integrated model makes the degree program in Dessau something special. If, like me, you come from a very specialized bachelor's degree (graphic design), you are confronted with one or two challenges. There are an incredible number of opportunities to try things out. That's why it's good to have a certain self-confidence in terms of your own skills and also to have the courage to try out new fields.
What has surprised you most during your studies so far?
At first, I didn't realize what Integrated Design meant exactly and what possibilities this understanding of design brings with it. It's working and learning on an equal footing - I consider Bachelor's students and fellow Master's students just as much as my instructors. You can learn an incredible amount, especially through social interaction.
Why did you choose Anhalt University of Applied Sciences?
During my Bachelor's degree, I was given a very one-sided perspective on design. At Anhalt University of Applied Sciences, design is viewed much more comprehensively. I found it exciting to work in a research-oriented way and to get out of my "bubble".
What city did you come to Dessau from? Did you settle in quickly?
I did my Bachelor's degree at Dresden University of Applied Sciences. The university there was very small and you were taken much more by the hand. I mainly needed the first semester in Dessau to settle into the degree program. Socially, I arrived here very quickly as you are welcomed with open arms. Fortunately, you can extend your studies. I decided to stay here longer because I started a project with a fellow student in semester 2 and we got the chance to develop it further. So far, my plan is to stay at the university for a few more years and we will implement the project with funding.
How do you feel about student life in Dessau?
The city may seem dull at first glance, but it offers a playground for creative ideas. You are warmly welcomed into a community of crazy minds and everyone can really be who they are here. Many new arrivals seem to blossom here, no idea is abstract enough and student life is very lively.
