With the start of the digital summer semester, Anhalt University of Applied Sciences welcomes Dr. Lorenz Neumann as the new Professor of Business Law at Campus Bernburg. In an interview, he gives a brief overview of the content of his teaching and research.
Professor Neumann, welcome to Anhalt University of Applied Sciences. You have been working at the Department of Economics since April 1. Please allow us a brief insight into your career path before your appointment at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences.
I studied law at the Free University of Berlin and after completing my legal clerkship at the beginning of 2003, I passed my second state examination in law. This was followed by my doctorate in 2005. In the past, I have been entrusted with a number of teaching assignments, including at the Berlin School of Economics and Law. I have been working as a lawyer in Berlin since 2003 and as a specialist lawyer for commercial and corporate law since the beginning of 2012. Most recently, I was employed as an in-house lawyer in the research department of the Technical University of Berlin.
The tasks as a lawyer are certainly different from the tasks you expect with students. Do you pursue a specific goal in your teaching assignments?
I want to inspire as many students as possible with the subject matter I teach, above all to demonstrate practical relevance and give students the necessary "tools" to enter the profession. My more than 17 years of experience as a lawyer and specialist lawyer will be good for this.
You are also working on various research projects. How can students benefit from this?
During my work as a lawyer, a major focus of my advisory work was in the area of the law of so-called "public partnerships", particularly in crisis and restructuring situations. In legal terms, a public partnership is a partnership that is intended to take on an indefinite number of "investors" as purely capitalistic shareholders on the basis of a pre-formulated partnership agreement in order to raise capital. I have already researched and published on this topic. In view of the current expected economic development, crisis and restructuring management in ailing companies will become very important. I will therefore continue to conduct research in this area in the future. For the students, my research results can be directly incorporated into teaching and their preparation for their later professional life.
How do you perceive the switch to online teaching?
The switch to purely online teaching will certainly be the biggest challenge at the moment. At the same time, however, it is also a great opportunity to take advantage of the excellent structures for modern e-learning that already exist here and actually "live" them. I offer live lectures and practical courses with suitable conferencing tools in all my courses so that students can prepare for their examinations in the best possible way and "loss-free".
