Biotechnology (Bachelor's degree, full-time program, dual study option)
Biotechnology is the use of the metabolic performance of naturally occurring or genetically modified microorganisms (bacteria, yeasts, etc.) and cells (plant and animal) to obtain special products of a marketable quality and size.
In addition to the organisms, the focus is therefore primarily on the technical realization of metabolic processes in bioreactors and biotechnical plants. This is what distinguishes biotechnology studies from biology studies!
This is precisely why biotechnologists are sought after by companies and are given preference in recruitment.
The degree program is an exciting and challenging mixture of scientific subjects and technical disciplines, which are clearly conveyed through interesting lectures, practical courses and labs.
There is hardly any other course that offers such a broad range of subjects. This is what makes studying biotechnology so interesting and varied.
A special feature of the biotechnology course at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences is the joint foundation course at Department 7 in the first 2 to 3 semesters. Here, engineering and scientific basics are taught and insights into all of the Department's degree programs are provided. You can then choose one of the 4 degree programs Biotechnology, Food Technology, Pharmaceutical Engineering or Process Engineering and have maximum flexibility in specializing for your future career.
After successfully completing a degree in biotechnology, there are excellent professional and career opportunities in all areas that use biotechnological and genetic engineering processes.
For example, you can work in research and development teams at companies and institutes. Here, new biotechnological processes and products are developed with the help of genetic engineering in ultra-modern laboratory and pilot plant facilities.
Another field of application is the modern production of bioproducts, foodstuffs and active pharmaceutical ingredients under ultra-clean room conditions. Here, the focus is on working with high-tech bioreactors.
Other opportunities include working in planning departments and in quality management in large biotech and pharmaceutical companies as well as in public authorities.
However, biotechnologists also find many professional challenges in the agricultural and food industries, in medicine and in the environmental sector.
If possible, you should have completed a lab course lasting several weeks, ideally in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry, as ideal preparation for your studies.
If you have already completed vocational training in this field, an additional industrial placement is not necessary.
In any case, you should consider doing a lab at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences. There are many opportunities to get a taste of lectures and laboratory work. Please ask us about available internships.
The right preparation
Achievements from a first degree program and/or after a change of degree program or university and/or stays abroad that were completed at another university can be credited upon application after enrolment.
The examinations committee of the respective Department is responsible for this in consultation with the relevant Degree Program Advisor/lecturers.
A future Biotechnology student should have an interest in the natural sciences and technology.
The subjects of biology, chemistry and physics, as well as mathematics, are therefore important foundations.
Ideally, you should have chosen a chemistry or biology course and/or have learned a chemical or biological profession.
Whether mathematics, chemistry or physics - our courses prepare you for a successful start to your studies. Further information
If you do not have a higher education entrance qualification, we also offer a preparatory course that will give you the opportunity to study at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences after successfully passing the test. You can find all relevant information via the following link.

In May or June each year, the Campus Köthen of Anhalt University of Applied Sciences organizes a university information day.
All interested parties are cordially invited to this day to get to know the university, instructors and students as well as our degree programs. Get a personal impression of our facilities and the campus on site and receive individual advice.
The dates of the next University Information Day in Köthen and at our other locations in Dessau and Bernburg can be found here.
