Food Technology (Bachelor's degree, full-time program, dual study option)
Food Technology is an interdisciplinary science and covers the entire food production process. Like the plant and animal raw materials from which they are produced, foods are complex material systems whose properties change during processing and storage. Food Technology therefore deals with the physical, chemical, microbiological, Process Technology and Business Studies aspects of the production of food from raw material to high-quality product. Food Technology provides knowledge of ingredient determination, recipe development, selection of the best possible production process with the associated machines and automated systems as well as packaging. Against this backdrop, the course content and the subsequent career opportunities are very varied and interesting.
The 7-semester (210 credits) degree course in Food Technology includes scientific modules as well as the necessary technical modules. The Bachelor's degree program is practice-oriented and prepares students for the diverse fields of work of food technologists in the technical area. Students also receive a scientific education. The course is divided into basic and advanced modules.
A special feature of the food technology degree course at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences is the joint foundation course at Department 7 in the first 2 to 3 semesters. Here, engineering and scientific basics are taught and insights into all degree programs of the Department are provided. This allows you to make a well-founded decision on one of the 4 degree programs Biotechnology, Food Technology, Pharmaceutical Engineering or Process Engineering and gives you maximum flexibility in specializing for your future career.
In the later program sequence of the Bachelor's degree course, you will then take course-specific modules such as: Food Technology of Plant and Animal Products, Food Process Technology, Food Analysis and Quality Assurance as well as Preservation and Packaging of Food. A wide range of elective modules allows you to deepen your industry or task expertise according to your inclinations and personal goals.
The practice-oriented education is supported by excursions and a high proportion of internships, which include bakery, meat and dairy products as well as beer.
The Bachelor's degree course in Food Technology is completed with a 12-week work placement and a subsequent 10-week Bachelor's thesis.
With a Bachelor's and especially a Master's degree, food technologists are in demand as highly qualified generalists not only in the food industry thanks to their interdisciplinary studies. During their studies, they have learned to look at problems from different perspectives and successfully develop optimal solutions using approaches from the natural sciences, engineering and technology.
The food industry is more diverse than almost any other sector. Graduates of Food Technology find their career entry in production from small regional companies to international corporations, research and development, quality assurance, marketing and management. Attractive fields of activity open up for food technologists not only in companies in the food industry, but also in scientific institutes, public administration, such as monitoring/inspection offices, and independently in consulting firms.

The right preparation
Achievements from a first degree program and/or after a change of degree program or university and/or stays abroad that were completed at another university can be credited upon application after enrolment.
The examinations committee of the respective Department is responsible for this in consultation with the relevant Degree Program Advisor/lecturers.
A future Food Technology student should have an interest in the natural sciences and technology.
The subjects of biology, chemistry and physics, as well as mathematics, are therefore important foundations.
Ideally, you should have chosen a chemistry or biology course and/or completed vocational training in the food industry.

If possible, you should have completed a lab or production lab lasting several weeks, ideally in the food industry, as ideal preparation for your studies.
If you have already completed vocational training in this area, an additional industrial placement is not necessary.
In any case, you should consider doing a lab at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences. There are many opportunities to get a taste of lectures and laboratory work. Please ask us about available internships.
