Food Technology (Master's program, full-time program, dual study option)
Food Technology is an interdisciplinary science and covers the entire food production process. Like the plant and animal raw materials from which they are produced, foods are complex material systems whose properties change during processing and storage. Food Technology therefore deals with the physical, chemical, microbiological, Process Technology and Business Studies aspects of the production of food from raw material to high-quality product. Food Technology provides knowledge of ingredient determination, recipe development, selection of the best possible production process with the associated machines and automated systems as well as packaging. Against this backdrop, the course content and the subsequent career opportunities are very varied and interesting.
The 3-semester (90 credits) Master's degree course in Food Technology comprises in-depth mathematical and scientific and, in particular, specialized technology-related but also cross-technology modules in Food Technology. It serves to deepen and broaden the knowledge gained from the Bachelor's degree. Against this background, the main areas of study include

In the Master's degree course, project-based knowledge transfer plays a much greater role alongside traditional knowledge transfer. As a result, students are required to work on a project from current research topics in the Department in small teams every semester.
This applies in particular to the product development module, in which students acquire skills such as teamwork and leadership qualities over two semesters, from the market/feasibility study to product manufacturing technology, packaging and market launch. The Master's program has therefore been accredited as research-oriented.
With a Master's degree, food technologists are in demand as highly qualified generalists not only in the food industry thanks to their interdisciplinary studies. During their studies, they have learned to look at problems from different perspectives and successfully develop optimal solutions using approaches from the natural sciences, engineering and technology.
The food industry is more diverse than almost any other sector. Food Technology graduates find their career start in production from small regional companies to international corporations, research and development, quality assurance, marketing and management. Attractive fields of activity open up for food technologists not only in companies in the food industry, but also in scientific institutes, public administration, such as monitoring/inspection offices, and independently in consulting firms.

The right preparation
Achievements from a first degree program and/or after a change of degree program or university and/or stays abroad that were completed at another university can be credited upon application after enrolment.
The examinations committee of the respective Department is responsible for this in consultation with the relevant Degree Program Advisor/lecturers.
Desirable for a successful Master's degree:

Basic scientific knowledge, especially in the fields of microbiology, ....

Basic knowledge of engineering fundamentals and in the fields of food process engineering and process technology as well as food apparatus engineering.

Basic knowledge of food and instrumental analysis.
Individual adaptation and bridging semesters or modules are offered for students from other life sciences degree programs (such as Pharmaceutical Engineering, Biotechnology, Agricultural Sciences, Ecotrophology, etc.).
Together with the Degree Program Advisor, existing knowledge deficits in relation to the Master's degree program in Food Technology are analyzed and advised. Based on this, modules from the Bachelor's degree course that need to be made up for and their organizational implementation are determined.
In May or June each year, the Campus Köthen of Anhalt University of Applied Sciences organizes a university information day.
