Leave of Absence from Studies
If you are studying at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences and are unable to attend classes for a longer period of time during the semester for an important reason, you can take a leave of absence. You will remain a student at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences during the semester of leave and retain your student status.
Important reasons for international students for a leave of absence
(according to § 9 para. 2 ImmaO) are
- Health reasons
- Maternity protection (pregnancy) and parental leave
Scope of a leave of absence
You can take a leave of absence for a maximum of two (full) consecutive semesters. In total, you cannot take more than four semesters of leave of absence during your entire course of study. A retroactive leave of absence is also not permitted.
Applying for a leave of absence
You must submit the application for a leave of absence to the Student Service Center within one month of the start of the semester (§9 para. 1 ImmaO). However, if the reason for the leave of absence is delayed, you can also submit the leave of absence after this deadline in special cases.
Important! Your application must always include proof of the reason for the leave of absence. The decision on the application will be made in writing.

Effects on the Residence Permit
Important! A semester of leave will affect your residence permit without a serious reason ! This was issued for the purpose of studying. During a semester of leave, you are no longer actively participating in your studies and therefore do not fulfill the purpose of your residence permit. The only exceptions are pregnancy or serious health reasons.
Voluntary internships abroad(not prescribed by the curriculum)also have a negative effect on your residence permit! You received your visa to study in Germany, not to gain work experience abroad.
