Anhalt University of Applied Sciences supports the responsible and intelligent use of AI systems in the context of studies and research. The use of AI tools can facilitate and accelerate literature research and usefully supplement conventional research methods in library catalogues, specialist databases or Google Scholar. By integrating AI tools, researchers and students can conduct research more efficiently and effectively by accessing comprehensive and up-to-date information. Text-generating tools such as ChatGPT can support the preparation of research and thus contribute to faster and better research results.
The use of generative models/AI requires a conscientious and responsible approach (Guideline on the Use of Generative Models/AI).
Many of the tools available are rather problematic from a data protection point of view. Do not enter any personal data of third parties and think carefully about the extent to which you want to disclose your own data. Authentication is often carried out via e-mail and telephone number. However, security reasons also speak in favor of this clear identification.
European copyright regulations also apply to AI-generated works. This also applies to the collection and use of so-called training data in the context of AI learning. AI service providers and users of such services must therefore comply with the applicable laws when using third-party content. Rights holders can assert claims for injunctive relief and damages against unlawful use. Copyright-protected works may generally not be uploaded to an AI tool if they are used for further training of the tools.
AI has a large ecological footprint. Data processing takes place in data centers and requires a lot of computing power, making it very energy-intensive. However, AI technologies also have enormous potential to tackle the environmental challenges of our time.

The use of AI technologies must always be identified and documented, regardless of whether they are used as permitted supplementary material or as a source. The verbatim adoption of AI-generated text passages is only permitted if the AI system and the specification of the interaction are specified. It is strongly recommended to critically evaluate and examine AI-generated texts before integrating them into your own work. The documentation of AI use should be transparent and comprehensible to enable readers to check the sources and information on which the argumentation is based (see guideline on the use of generative models/AI).

Listed below are AI tools that can serve as a useful supplement to literature searches in library search engines and literature databases, including free tools, tools that offer limited free use with a paid upgrade for unlimited use and paid tools (usually short free trial period or limited initial contingent).
All tools are subject to ongoing development, which results in changes to the function, costs, interface and terms of use.

Claude is an AI-supported language model from Anthropic that specializes in natural language processing. Registration is required to use the service; there are various pricing models depending on the scope of services. The free version covers basic functions, subject to a limit on the number of messages.

Keenious is an AI-based research tool for intelligent text analysis. It analyzes documents, texts or URLs and searches for relevant research papers in various databases and scientific resources.
Semantic Scholar
Semantic Scholar is a free AI-supported search tool for scientific papers. It is suitable for initial research, in-depth research and enables long-term monitoring of topics through alerts. The platform is similar to Google Scholar or Web of Science, but with additional AI functions.

These tools analyze inputs, understand contexts and generate texts based on them, which often appear human-like.
However, despite the plausibility of the outputs, these are not error-free and may be incorrect, as the underlying language models have no awareness of the correctness or incorrectness of the outputs. This phenomenon is known as "hallucination" and occurs particularly when sources are created to support the outputs. An example of this is the frequent failure of GPT 3.5 when creating sources.
It is therefore essential to carefully check and re-research the statements generated by AI tools to ensure the accuracy and validity of the results.
