Food Technology (part-time Bachelor's degree course, distance learning)
Food Technology is an interdisciplinary science and covers the entire food production process. Like the plant and animal raw materials from which they are produced, foods are complex material systems whose properties change during processing and storage. Food Technology therefore deals with the physical, chemical, microbiological, Process Technology and Business Studies aspects of the production of food from raw material to high-quality product. Food Technology provides knowledge of ingredient determination, recipe development, selection of the best possible production process with the associated machines and automated systems as well as packaging. Against this backdrop, the course content and the subsequent career opportunities are very varied and interesting.
The career-oriented degree course in Food Technology includes both scientific and the necessary technical modules. The Bachelor's degree course is practice-oriented and prepares students for the diverse fields of work of food technologists in the technical sector. Students also receive a scientific education. The course is divided into basic and advanced modules.
First, the necessary basic mathematical and scientific knowledge is taught. The basic engineering training also includes technical modules such as fluid mechanics and thermodynamics as well as materials technology. This is followed later in the program sequence by course-specific subjects such as food chemistry, food process and apparatus engineering and food analysis. Elective modules allow you to deepen your industry or task expertise according to your inclinations and personal goals.
The practice-oriented training is supported by labs, which include bakery, meat and dairy products as well as beer.
With a Bachelor's and especially a Master's degree, food technologists are in demand as highly qualified generalists not only in the food industry thanks to their interdisciplinary studies. During their studies, they have learned to look at problems from different perspectives and successfully develop optimal solutions using approaches from the natural sciences, engineering and technology.
The food industry is more diverse than almost any other sector. Graduates of the extra-occupational Food Technology degree program find their career entry in areas ranging from production in small regional companies to international corporations, research and development, quality assurance, marketing and management. If you are already working in the industry and gain further qualifications through your studies, you will be offered better paid and more responsible positions outside the shift system. Attractive fields of activity open up for food technologists not only in companies in the food industry, but also in scientific institutes, public administration, such as monitoring/inspection offices and independently in consulting firms.

The right preparation
Achievements from a first degree program and/or after a change of degree program or university and/or stays abroad that were completed at another university can be credited upon application after enrolment.
The examinations committee of the respective Department is responsible for this in consultation with the relevant Degree Program Advisor/lecturers.
A future Food Technology student should have an interest in the natural sciences and technology.
The subjects of biology, chemistry and physics, as well as mathematics, are therefore important foundations.
Ideally, you should have chosen a chemistry or biology course and/or completed vocational training in the food industry.

Important information on part-time studies
The attendance times in a semester follow the following pattern:

Four times Friday and Saturday lectures, practical courses, labs, consultations, projects, examinations

One week of lectures, practical courses, labs, consultations, projects, examinations
The attendance times will be announced in advance. Participation in the classes offered is voluntary.
All examinations/exams are held at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences in
Köthen University of Applied Sciences. The examination dates are already integrated into the attendance
attendance phases and take place exclusively within these times.
Individual dates for retake examinations are possible by arrangement with the program coordinator.
This degree program is recognized for educational leave. You can apply to your employer for 5 days of educational leave per year.
Following your Bachelor's degree, you have the opportunity to continue your academic education at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences in the Master's degree program in Food Technology while working.
Quality assurance is of enormous importance in industry and therefore also plays a special role in the training and further education of specialists. Anhalt University of Applied Sciences enables students to acquire practical quality management knowledge in combination with a highly regarded additional certificate from TÜV SÜD Akademie(QMF certificate).
The Quality Management module is led by Prof. Dr. Jean Titze, who himself worked in industry for over ten years and is able to offer this additional training as an accredited TÜV speaker. Working students in particular can update their know-how in quality management and have additional proof of their competence. Their companies can also benefit equally from the knowledge imparted at the university.
