Exciting biomedical engineering: optical imaging to try out and understand

How can light be utilized to obtain information from the human body?

We will get to the bottom of these and many other questions together. After you have learned why optical imaging is interesting for medical professionals, you will become active yourself: In the laboratory at Anhalt University in Köthen, you will take your own images and consider, design and test how the recorded data can be analyzed.

Excursion into biomedical engineering

Myoelectric activity in humans and its possible use, such as myo-prosthetics and myo-exo-skeletons

Experience medical engineering up close. Myoelectric activity in humans - what even is that? On Girls' Day, we will explore this topic together. We will record muscle activity on test subjects, get to know a medical diagnostic system and carry out an experiment with a myoelectric exoskeleton of a hand. You will learn how myoelectric functionalities can be used in prosthetics and for exoskeletons.

Jules Vernes' dream comes true: From water to electricity

Dear students, the Department of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Management and the Anhalt Center for Continuing Education (Weiterbildungszentrum) Anhalt University of Applied Sciences invites you to Girls' Day. In this event, we will tell you about Jules Verne and “green hydrogen”, and we will explain why this type of energy storage and energy conversion is so important for our society and environment.

We will also show you how a solar cell, an electrolyzer, a storage unit, a fuel cell and a consumer are constructed using an experiment kit. You can even carry out small experiments yourself with the H2 case. Finally, you can take part in a short quiz using your cell phones.

Impressions from Girls' Day Online on April 22, 2021

On "Girls' Day out of the box", jointly organized by the three departments of the Köthen campus, the Department of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Management invited students to take part in two events on April 22, 2021:

In a presentation, Prof. Dr. Hannes Kurtze took participants on a journey into the world of sounds: "Sounds, notes, Spotify—How does music get into your cell phone?" Experimenting with cell pones wasn’t just allowed but most welcome! Participants were able to try out how sounds (in our case, created with a harmonica or tuning fork) can be represented graphically with a cell phone: creating images from sounds! And this process is also beneficial for the transmission of sound data, for example with streaming services such as Spotify.

We also experimented and tinkered as part of the presentation held by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Johannes Tümler. Here, our participants were able to experience how creative and “playful” programming can be—by tackling the question of how to turn an ATM into a games console with its own computer game.

The whole event was held under the motto “Your STEM lab@home”. The framework for all offers was provided by a presentation of Anhalt University and the Köthen campus in collaboration with colleagues of the STEM SchoolCampus, as well as a presentation about our degree program “Software Localization”, which is unique in this form in Germany.
