A member of our institute, Professor Golam Abu Zakaria, was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany on ribbon on March 22, 2024.

Classification and recognition: The Federal Cross of Mer it is the only general award of merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. It is awarded for special achievements in the political, Economics, cultural, intellectual or honorary fields.
Professor Zakaria received this award from District Administrator Jochen Hagt for his decades of voluntary work for his educational and health projects in Bangladesh, as well as his commitment to German-Bengali international understanding.
In order to improve basic medical care for the local population, he co-founded the Bangladesh Study and Development Center e.V. in 1996, with which he built a secondary school for the children and especially the girls of the Naogaon region in 1999. With the support of further donations, this school was expanded into a primary and secondary school, which now teaches around 600 pupils, 60% of whom are girls. He initiated the establishment of a mother and child health center in and for the Naogaon region, which serves over 50,000 people in rural northern Bangladesh. With the help of other supporters, he organized the addition of solar panels to the unstable energy supply of the school and health center in 2011.
In the field of medical physics, he co-founded the Medical Physics in Developing Countries working group in 1993 and took over its management in 2001.
In 2009, Dr. Zakaria received the Personality of the Decade Award 2000-2010 from two renowned oncological societies, the Oncology Club and the South Asian Federation of Oncologists, for his commitment to cancer prevention in Bengal. In 2011, he was the first non-medical person to be honored as an Honorary Fellow of the Bangladesh Cancer Society and as a Fellow of the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences. Last year, Harvard Medical School honored him with the 2019 Global Radiation Oncology Distinguished Leader Award. He received Honorary Membership of the International Organization of Medical Physics in 2020 and Honorary Membership of the German Society of Medical Physics in 2023.

You can find more information on the honorary commitment of Professor Zakaria under the following links, from which the text information was also taken.
